James Spiva feels comfy performing for hundreds of people. But put him in a fat suit and paint layers and layers of greenish latex on his confront? That takes a piffling getting used to.

To play the title role in "Shrek: The Musical" at Cocoa Village Playhouse, Spiva had to main the art of hanging out.

He sits while playhouse makeup chief Sharon Metz transforms the 25-year-quondam into a big, mean, green ogre. For two hours. In a confined space backstage. With little to do. Four shows a weekend for iii weeks. Counting rehearsal time? That'south roughly 26 hours in the makeup chair.

"It's a whole head cowel, a olfactory organ piece, a jaw slice, a cheek bone, forehead piece, a lot of liquid latex in between, airbrushing ... the first fourth dimension we got it on was a little intimidating. I'thou not one to get claustrophobic, simply ..." Spiva said recently at i Shrek makeup session.

What will he do during all that time?

"See how Sharon'south mean solar day is going," he said. "Say hi to the people who are walking by, peeking in and laughing at me."

"This is what he'll be doing, sitting in the chair," Metz said equally she used a blowdryer to dry the latex on his face up.

"But they probably don't have cool people like Sharon Metz to talk to," he joked.

The standing around is something Metz is used to since she styles hair as a cosmetologist and volunteers at the theater.

Spiva keeps his hot pink water tumbler close at hand to stay hydrated. And speaking of Hot Pinkish, that's the proper noun of his new band. Fans of Vintage may recognize him as their drummer. Playing in a ring, or 2, is that other affair he does when he's non singing, dancing and choreographing fight scenes in his heavy Shrek boots.

He'll go through the procedure, he said, "just as long as I go to perform."

Some of his acting credits include "La Muzzle aux Folles," "Young Frankenstein" and "Little Shop of Horrors." He played a geisha last year, and "I had to portray an older human being for 'La Cage,' and then I got to wear age makeup. But this is a whole new world."

The bear witness, which is weekends of November. 21-Dec. 7, is directed by Anastacia Hawkins-Smith and also stars Benjamin Cox as Lord Farquaad and Ashley Willsey as Princess Fiona.
